Paul W. O’Brien

My research agenda is focused on environmental sociology specifically disaster research. Events researched include earthquakes, flooding, hurricanes, tornadoes and the 911 disaster in New York City. Other areas investigated include issues of gender inequality, demographic dynamics of rural counties in New Mexico, emergency preparedness, assessment in higher education and drug court's in California and New Mexico. As of AY 2011-2012 I have completed 19 field investigations, 15 grants, co-authored 20 articles and book chapters, sole authored 8 articles and given 46 professional presentations at a variety of professional conferences.

Teaching forms the core my faculty responsibilities at Stanislaus. I am committed to honest, transparent relations with all students and members of the university community. In addition, I believe in the core value of support for faculty governance in higher education. I have represented my department as the Chairperson and as the department representative to the Stanislaus Academic Senate. I have also represented the campus at the State-wide Academic Senate of the CSU in Long Beach and also served on both the Executive Committees on the local and State-wide senates.
