Alumni Are Powering — and Leading— Local Businesses

Dallas Marsh standing in front of bowling lanesCSU Stanislaus educates generation after generation of the Valley's workforce and has produced many of its entrepreneurs and community leaders. And they're not all business majors.

Dallas Marsh graduated in 1989 with a bachelor's degree in physical science and a minor in chemistry. She planned to become a teacher, but while completing her degree, her time was increasingly being taken up by the business she co-owned with her husband: McHenry Bowl in Modesto.

When Garrad Marsh — now mayor of Modesto — became active in local politics, Dallas took over more of the work associated with the business. And while her major field of study was in the sciences, she said the overall education and experience she received at CSU Stanislaus has made a major impact on her success.

"It doesn't seem like a science degree would help in running a bowling center," she said, "but in the course of getting that degree, a student develops analytical and critical thinking, organizational and planning skills, time management, team building and leadership. Those are all important aspects to running a business."

Marsh said the presence of the university and the quality of its graduates should encourage businesses to consider the area for new endeavors.

"Education in this area is vital," she said. "Companies interested in moving here want to have a ready, able and intelligent workforce from which to draw. Having CSU Stanislaus in our area is the spur needed to develop a vibrant economic climate in the Valley."
